Travel Post: Finding Rosemaling Inspiration in Sweden
The Resident Artisans are traveling through Scandinavia! In her first travel post, Tara Austin writes about finding rosemaling inspiration in Stockholm.
Greetings from Sweden! Spring is alive here and rosemaling forms have been found in many facets of Stockholm.
I'm very thankful for this trip overseas and my past travels as they are times of creative growth and rejuvenation. I make sure to have a notebook and pen to sketch new concepts and pattern ideas. These ideas may arrive from the sought out gallery or museum, or found in unexpected architectural flourishes and flowering urns on the streets.
By happenstance, one of my favorite American painters, Philip Taaffe, is having his first exhibition in Scandinavia. The gallery host explained how his work has been well-received since the exhibit opened in early March. I've been attracted to his layers of patterns, color, and mark-making.
While in Stockholm I made sure to find the Svensk Tenn store for interior furnishes. The store celebrates the work of Swedish design icon Josef Frank, creating replicas and new interpretations of his creative years dating back to the 1930s.
