North House programs offer a great way for anyone to come down and get a taste of craft. Some programs don't require pre-registration, making them convenient drop-in opportunties if you happen to be around campus!

Instructor in Residence: Gigi Stafne - Herbalism

Longtime North House Herbalism Instructor Gigi Stafne will be joining us as Instructor in Residence for the month of October, offering a variety of talks, classes, and demonstrations.

Daily Sailing on the Hjordis

Experience Grand Marais from the lake - sail with us aboard our 50' traditionally rigged schooner Hjørdis!

Instructor Residencies

Hands on! Come down to campus and see live craft in action with our summer instructor residencies. From birch bark weaving to paddle carving, there will be a different craft to check each week this summer at North House. Watch, ask questions, and maybe even try your hand.

Thursdays through Sundays, 10am - 4pm, with a mini-course on Saturdays.

Tour the North House Campus

From the blacksmith shop to the woodshop, there is always something happening on campus. Discover the rich folk school tradition, visit the classrooms in action, and hear the stories! Meet at the Yellow Building - no registration required.

Try-it: Youth Series

Taught by our North House interns, these mini-courses are specially designed for your curious kids. Whether building mason jar bee houses or a stringed instrument, these courses are sure to spark imagination and creativity.

Try-it: Timber Framing

Students will be introduced to the concept of timber framing by exploring timber framing tools, joinery, and history. As a group, students will raise a small timber frame and take it apart.

Fridays 10am - noon (not offered June 21 or September 13). Children over 8 are welcome with an adult. Click below for registration information!

Try-it: Wood Fired Baking

Students will be introduced to baking bread using a wood fired oven. Each student will get to bake carta di musica and focaccia while exploring the history and science of bread baking.

Calling young creative folks! Summer Art and Craft Camps at North House Folk School and the Grand Marais Art Colony are week-long day camps for youth ages 5 - 14.

Fjord Horse Experience: Two-Hour Pleasure Driving

Enjoy a two-hour experience with Norwegian Fjord Horses, a unique breed of gentle horses, while learning the basics of pleasure driving a horse and cart. Lessons begin in an outdoor arena and progress to beautiful trails through the quiet woods above Grand Marais.
