2024 Summer Solstice and Wooden Boat Festival
Thank you to everyone who came to the Summer Solstice and Wooden Boat Festival! It was a wonderful weekend filled with creativity, craft, and community. Check out some of the photos from this year's event.
The festival kicked off on Friday, June 21, with contra dancing, a poetry slam, and a neighborhood picnic in the evening.
Folks also paddled/sailed/rowed on the Grand Marais harbor on Friday evening. Photo by Mary Tripoli.
This year's event brought a greater focus on the crafts of the folk school, with crafting opportunities for kids, families, and folks of all ages.
Learning how to split wood
The Northwoods Fiber Guild hosted a felting station where kids of all ages made felted butterflies. Some of the butterflies are now on the fence in front of the new Welcome Center.
The Family Craft station was popular with folks of all ages. Visitors made brightly-colored suns out of craft supplies, some of which made appearances in the audience at the Summer Solstice Pageant.
The Blacksmith Shop was open for blacksmithing demos on Saturday. Community members stopped by to learn about the craft and see handmade tools from North House's forge.
The Lake Superior Chowder Experience, a staple of the festival, raised over $4000 for Empty Bowls Cook County, fighting hunger in our community.
The Rec Park transformed into a walk-through boat display on Saturday. Kids picked up a special scavenger hunt (designed by North House interns) and visited the stations throughout the festival.
The grand finale of the event was the Summer Solstice Pageant put on by the Good Harbor Hill players. Despite the rain, hundreds of community members congregated on campus for the show, which ended with a rainbow over the lake.
