Overview

A well-made tool represents centuries of human innovation. Whether it’s an ax, hand plane, or saw, every tool we use embodies a legacy of problem-solving, imagination, and culture. 

This May, join us for a week of coursework that celebrates these handheld marvels of human achievement and puts them to use in unique ways. This theme week will feature the traditional hand tools and building techniques of Norway, a land where wood has been the building material of choice for centuries. 

We are thrilled to welcome a slate of talented featured instructors to lead nine unique courses focused on traditional building and toolmaking. These craftsmen are formally trained in the careful and painstaking work of historical restoration using pre-industrial tools. They will share deep knowledge acquired from years of experience preserving the historic structures that dot the Norwegian countryside. 

Coursework includes opportunities to make the blades used in the tools in Traditional Forged Tools for the Woodworker and Bench Plane and Pjål Irons. Learn to make and assemble handles and other components in Norwegian Hand Planes, Scrub Planes, Norwegian Hand Planes, Moulding Planes and Frame Saws. Or focus on techniques in using the tools in Norwegian Sash Windows and Grindbygg Construction. We’ll also host Natural Paints and Plasters, exploring beautiful architectural finishes. New to the whole endeavor of tool making? Norwegian Hand Planes, Scrub Planes or Traditional Forged Tools for the Woodworker make great places to start.  

The week will include evening presentations and community gatherings designed to help you dig into the fascinating research and stories brought by this unique group of individuals. Don’t miss this singular opportunity to connect with some of Norway’s most skilled knowledge and culture bearers on the beautiful North House campus. And who knows—there might be waffles and folk songs in the mix too.
