In this toolmaking class, function is the name of the game. Students will experience the full range of forging skills while making tools to fill their toolbelts! Class will start by making a pair of logdogs, an easy project that provides a good introduction to hammering and using an anvil. Next, we’ll make a snapline end, which introduces some of the most commonly used forging techniques. With these initial projects under our belt, we’ll go on to make other tools every woodworker needs, like scratcher awls and welded socket chisels, and will learn about navars—or boring bits—and the tools needed to make them. Though the first attempt at these tools will definitely not result in perfection, students will learn essential geometries and forging skills like heat treatment and forewelding. Each student will leave not only with a toolbelt filled with tools but a brain filled with new skills!
