A scrub plane is designed to quickly remove large amounts of wood.  Students will build a classic Norwegian scrub plane using traditional hand tools and techniques. The course will begin with an introduction to the history, design, and use of wooden hand planes, followed by instruction in sharpening and setting a plane iron. Each student will complete a fully functional scrub plane with a flat sole and a cambered iron, suitable for rough stock preparation and general woodworking. No previous experience is required, although some familiarity with basic hand tools such as a knife, chisel, and hand plane is an advantage.

Required Tools

Participants should bring their own woodworking tools. All edge tools should be sharpened and ready for use before the workshop.

Typical tools include:

• Plane iron
• Bench chisels (including a sturdy ¾” or 1” chisel)
• Small chisels (3–6 mm and 8–10 mm)
• A long, thin, very sharp chisel for fine work
• Wooden mallet
• Sharp knife
• Fine backsaw and narrow keyhole or compass saw
• Brace or drill with a 4–5 mm bit
• Rule, marking gauge, marking knife, and pencil
• A well-tuned smoothing plane and, if possible, a small block plane
