Boatbuilding

Building the Lake Superior Picnic Boat

Course Overview

Here is a boatbuilding class designed with the boating family in mind. The reason we build boats should be to use them, not just to build them. The goal is to build a craft that will get folks out on the water quickly in a handmade boat. Using stitch and glue techniques—a great method for developing a strong hull—together as a class we will build a simple V-bottomed outboard utility skiff out of domestic marine plywood based on Pete Culler’s Chubb design. We will cover design basics and teach all the relatively straightforward steps so you can build this simple, functional boat yourself in your home workshop. The finished product will be elegant yet practical, trailer-able and equally at home on a quiet inland lake or hopping out to the Apostle Islands for a picnic! The class boat will be for sale at the end of the course. Join us in building North House’s first Lake Superior Picnic Boat!
