Biomimicry: How to Develop Sustainable Designs Inspired by Nature

Course Overview

Let’s face it, the news from nature hasn’t been uplifting lately. One of the most potent ideas out there pushing back against the doom and gloom is biomimicry, a practice that learns from and mimics the strategies found in nature to solve human design challenges—and finds hope along the way. In this workshop, you’ll head right into the field, using the North Shore itself to begin to understand this way of thinking. Led by Sue Okerstrom, a certified biomimicry professional from the Biomimicry 3.8 Institute, students in this workshop will receive an introduction to biomimicry and develop their own design idea based on a biological specimen they collect in the field and examine under a microscope. Careful observation, journaling, and creative thinking will lead to new and surprising ideas, and might change your perspective long-term!
