Yak/Merino Neck Gaiter
Course Overview
Watch out, wool, there is a wonder fiber that may have you beat. Warmer than wool and extra soft, too, yak fiber is perfect for winter and fun to felt! In this course students will felt a super-warm yet lightweight and breathable gaiter great for winter outings or to give as a gift. Using natural colored yak fiber, viscose, merino wool, and their own design motifs, students will create a custom fit gaiter. Skills gained in this class will be creating and using a resist for seamless three-dimensional felt, layout of fine fibers, use of viscose (wood pulp fibers) in feltmaking, creating and applying pre-felts, wet felting, needlefelting, and fulling. Materials fee covers yak fiber, wool roving or top, viscose, resist, felting needle, elastic, barrel clasp, soap, handout, and use of equipment in class. Previous wet felting experience is desired, but beginners can do this too.
Required Tools
Students should bring:
- 2 old bath towels
- Container for water
- Favorite felting tools, if you have them (i.e. felting stone, Palm washboard, etc.)
- Pencil
- Flexible tape measure
- Scissors
- Ideas for design motif
