This course is an overview of Windsor design and construction. Explore the origins and history of Windsor stools and chairs along with the traditional methods and tools used to construct them. Students will learn how to select appropriate materials, split green wood for legs and stretchers, and sculpt a seat using hand tools. Students will experience both an electric lathe and a spring-pole lathe, a simple foot-powered wood-turning device for shaping rough lumber into legs. Simple joinery methods will be used for the final assembly. During class students will assemble one stool and will gain additional practice on the lathe as time allows. Maximum course size is six, allowing for ample time for hands-on building and practice turning. In this session, students will construct the popular kitchen stool, 25" in height.

You will need the following tools for this class:

I hesitate to require tools, but if you have tools bring them because it is benefiicial to use the tools you are familiar with or in some cases learn to use the tools you own.  If you don't own tools and plan to buy them, it is perhaps better to wait until after the class at North House in which we willl discuss tools and the right tools to buy.
