Basketry

Willow Frame Basketry

Course Overview

Learn the basics of traditional Roma frame basketry. The travelling people of Europe would harvest willow, hazelnut and hawthorne whips from the hedgerows along the road and weave these ribbed baskets. There are endless opportunities to play with shape and size, and students will cover all the basic techniques needed to make frame baskets on their own. These will include learning a gods-eye fasten, making twisted hoops, inserting ribs, and learning the over-under weave, using only willow. Leave the class with a large frame basket or two small ones, and the knowledge to make another at home. This is a great introduction to this type of basketry.
