Viking Age Turnshoes
Course Overview
Walk a mile in the shoes of a Viking by making your own shoes based on the archaeological finds from Viking-Age Denmark. Shoes will be made with a single piece of leather for the uppers, a single piece of heavier leather for the sole, and will be secured around the ankle with lace. Class will begin with a brief presentation on Viking-Age footwear, and the tools of the trade. Tools used will be modern equivalents of Viking-Age tools. Then we will create the pattern for the shoes, cut out the pieces, punch the holes, stitch the uppers and soles together, and finish the shoes. There will be a few different styles, and finishing dyes and oils from which to choose. Students should bring anything they wear in their shoes (like socks or inserts) while making the pattern to ensure a proper fit.
