Blacksmithing & Toolmaking
Strippers, Splitters, Knockers and Froes: Tools for Basket-Making
Course Overview
This class will focus on making the various tools used by basket makers. Whether you work with birch bark, black ash, willow, or other weave-able materials, it can be difficult to find that tools that you need. From simple fids and strippers for bark and splint, to froes and splitters, willow knockers, and the beloved and simple awls that are used in almost every weaving practice. Students will have significant freedom to spend their time creating the tools that apply to their work and are helpful to them, plus the opportunity to try them out and gain feedback from the company of accomplished basket craftspeople. We will take advantage of a well-equipped shop environment and have the support and supervision of a long time tool maker and user.
