Fiber Art
Scandinavian Squareweaving on a Tabletop Warp-Weighted Loom
Course Overview
Squareweave is woven in locations around the world. In the southwestern part of the US, it is known as Navajo weaving. In Norway, it is called Rutevev, and Rölakan in Sweden. As far back as the Viking Age, this technique was woven on an upright, warp-weighted loom to make coverlets, and sometimes woven in combination with other techniques. The finished piece woven in this class may be used as a table runner or wall hanging.
This class is an opportunity for students who already have a tabletop warp-weighted loom or for those who would like to experience this type of weaving (looms will be provided). Previous weaving experience is helpful, but not necessary. The instructor will provide instruction to students on how to warp the looms and weave on them.
A variety of examples and reference materials for design inspiration will be available. This course welcomes beginning and experienced weavers alike. For those students who are using a loom provided by the instructor, they will need to complete their weaving in class.
Instructor will provide written instructions, numerous colors of Swedish and Norwegian yarns for weft and either linen or seine twine for warp.
