Fiber Art
Nuno Felted Capelet Pullover
Course Overview
There is something incredibly enticing about the process of combining silk and wool to create a completely new fabric called Nuno. It’s a whimsical process near to painting, combining silk and colorful merino fiber and then transforming it into a light and warm wearable, more than a scarf, less than a sweater. Students will learn the basics of nuno felting by learning how to lay out a fine layer of merino fiber over a collage of silk fibers. Students will also learn how to make silk pre-felt, which is a really fun method of playing with shapes and collage in the nuno process.
No artistic skill is needed, just a willingness to accept the unpredictable and some patience with the nuno process. Wear comfortable shoes-there is a lot of standing. Youth age 16+ may sign up for this course upon approval from the instructor. Please email info@northhouse.org with this request.
White or black silk for the scarves can be purchased in class, but you are welcome to bring your own dyed or patterned silk to work with (see the Optional Tools list on the class page online), based upon inspection that it will work.
Required Tools
- Two large towels
- Plastic bag to carry your things home
Optional Tools

- You may bring your own silk. This could be silk gauze, tissue silk, habotai/china silk/paj/ponge (5 momme). Smaller pieces of silk or other fine fibers for decorations can be really fun to play with!
