Blacksmithing & Toolmaking
Introduction to the Forge
Course Overview
This course is designed as an introduction to the methods and language of the blacksmith; whether you’ve experimented with a forge in your backyard or never built a fire before, this course is for you. Students will learn by demonstration, then try out the techniques for themselves. The course will cover the following topics: safety in the shop, a brief history of forging, basic fuel types, fire building and tending, hammering techniques, and basic steel manipulation. Students will practice their new skills by producing small items such as hooks and fire pokers. Several books illustrated with design ideas and methodology will be available for reference. Materials fee includes the use of coal/gas for forgework as well as the cost of steel.
