How to Make a Color Way

Course Overview

In this class we will explore how to make a color way: 10 different dyes, 10 different color ways!  We will cover some color theory, the history of the dyes, the mordanting process, the dyeing process, and how to weigh and measure the fiber and dyes.  We will also create and dye with an indigo vat to overdye with each color as well as get a gradation of blues. Students will take home many samples, dyeing instructions, information on each dye used, and source lists on where to get them.

Required Tools:

  • Apron
  • Rubber gloves
  • Two old towels
  • Paper towels
  • Two dozen small baggies
  • Calculator
  • Pen 
  • Paper
