Geometric Straw Mobiles: The Traditional Craft of Himmeli

Course Overview

In this course students will construct a himmeli mobile. They will gain experience working with geometric shapes as they learn how to construct this intermediate himmeli style or alternate beginning himmeli. Students will also learn about the cultural traditions and history of the craft. This class will emphasize himmeli use in Finland but also discuss similar traditions in other Nordic and Baltic countries.

Experience with himmeli and/or straw work helpful. Beginners, based on experience, may choose an alternate style of himmeli to the intermediate style shown.
