Course Overview

Up North, there's a saying that there's no bad weather, just the wrong clothes. Outfit yourself with the right sort of clothing to protect your body from the elements. In this course you will work with Marcie McIntire to design, construct, and embellish a comfortable and warm pair of deerskin mittens to wear during the winter months. The mittens are ideal for daily wear, working outside, or long winter adventures. The basics of deerskin sewing will be taught in addition to the sewing of a warm wool lining. Explore Anishinaabe beadwork with Marcie and decorate the mittens with bead embroidery using your own design. Materials fee includes deerskin, wool fabric, beads, needles, and thread.

NOTE: Hand sewing deerskin requires some hand strength.

Required Tools

Optional Tools

  • Reading glasses if you use them or magnifier
