Blacksmithing & Toolmaking
Decorative Ironwork: The Art of the Candle Holder
Course Overview
Decorative and functional ironwork has a long history throughout the North Country. Hinges, gates, fireplace tools, or even the humble candlestick: the most ordinary of objects becomes a striking work of art. In this class, students will create their own unique candle holder or sconce. The course will cover topics including safety in the shop, forging pipe, fullering, punching holes, splitting, riveting, decorative chasing/scrolling, and forge braising. This course will be very vigorous and physical; although not required, students are encouraged to enroll in the 1-day course “Introduction to the Forge” prior to this experience.
