Damascus Rings: Jewelry from the Blacksmith Shop
Combining blacksmithing and jewelry-making, this course offers an opportunity for beginning and advanced students to develop their skills as they forge and craft a Damascus ring with a silver liner. Students will begin by forging a piece of Damascus steel, a particularly beautiful and ornamental steel filled with folds and distinctive patterns. Making Damascus is hard work, and the class will work together to produce the material for everyone's individual projects. Students will then shape that steel into a ring blank to be lined with silver. Next, using a combination of hand and power tools, students will refine the ring to reveal the damascus pattern and the finished ring. Appropriate for total beginners and advanced students in blacksmithing, this is a great introduction to blacksmithing with a stunning handcrafted end product. Note: this course requires the use of sledge hammers and hand hammers for the first three days; thus, some physical stamina is necessary to complete the project.
