Course Overview

Any tube or pipe such as a swan bone, cow horn, or hollowed out branch will give anyone, anywhere in the world, three special Nature tones. These three tones bind life on earth. Edda poems name them as giants of creation. Cow calls and ritual songs preserve them. Kari learned the techniques, rituals, and lore of the Elderberry Branch flute from Aksel Striim in Denmark.

In this class, we will make "bored core" style flutes together from PVC and dowels. Students will hear and compare "pulled core" selje or willow flute, swan radius, neverlur and cow horn. Learn the rituals, lore, and tunes of this Nordic/universal instrument and take one home.

Students ages 14+ may register for this course independently. Youth ages 12+ may register if accompanied by an adult. Adult/child pairs will complete two projects and pay two materials fees. A 25% tuition discount applies to the youth registrant when registering with a full paying adult; call to register.
