Fiber Art
Ancient Wool Crafts from Northern Europe
Course Overview
In this course, we will explore the roots of textile crafts in Northern Europe by using ancient tools to work with wool from heritage sheep. Much of the course will focus on learning historical techniques for processing wool and spinning yarn with unusual tools. Students will have the opportunity to try wool combs reproduced from an archaeological find, and they will use a niks, a simple tool from Estonia, to wind weaving thread. Throughout the course, we will process and spin wool from double-coated sheep from the Northern European short-tailed sheep family.
Skill/experience note: Students should be able to spin a continuous woolen thread using any spinning tool (or without tools).
Physical ability note: The use of spinning and wool processing tools requires fine motor skills and the ability to do repetitive hand movements. Some tools have sharp points. When working with raw wool and sharp tools, it is always recommended to be up to date on vaccination for tetanus.
