Course Overview

In this class, students will learn importance of darkness and starry nights in deepening our connection to the natural world. The focus will be on simple things we can see with our eyes like moonrises, meteors, the Milky Way, and lunar phases. We will identify the brightest stars and constellations and learn how they rise, set, and change with the seasons. Planets are always on the move; we will learn the secrets of their cycles and how to track them in the years ahead with the help of a stargazing app (see below). Beyond the stars lie countless nebulae, star clusters, and galaxies that take us to the edge of the known universe. Since these objects are typically visible in binoculars and telescopes, the instructor will offer recommendations on what equipment to buy and instructions on how to use it. Weather permitting, we will head up to the Pincushion Mountain parking lot after sunset to look at the moon and other summer night celestial sights through a telescope.

Class will meet from 4-6pm, then again from 9-11:30 p.m. on August 22.

Please download the free Stellarium Mobile and Star Chart apps for identifying stars, planets, and constellations. We will use both in class.
