Sofia Rose Vanderlan

Maple Grove, MN

Sofia is a descendant of the Grand Portage Anishinaabe and skilled in traditional Indigenous art forms. Through art, Sofia expresses her love for family and community. Her beadwork talents range from wearable pieces to displayable artwork. Most recently, St. Catherine University commissioned a beaded wall piece as part of their permanent art collection. Her work has been worn by renowned author Louise Erdrich, along with state tribal leaders and community members. In addition to beadwork, Sofia is skilled in fingerweaving, birchbark crafts, and other traditional art forms. She was taught these crafts by Grand Portage elders and wants to continue sharing this knowledge with others in the community.
