Timber Framing

Service Learning Project: Norwegian-Style Timber Framed Grindbygg “Tents” for Campus

Course Overview

Help North House move beyond the white plastic tent by building small grindbygg structures for campus! The grounds are often graced by a variety of beautiful timbered structures, but we have a particular need for several smaller “tent-sized” frames that are easy to put up and take down and can be used for shelter for demonstrating artisans and and other outdoor projects. Learn the basics of grindbygg building, a very old style of Norwegian timber framing, which is highly adaptable, uses relatively inexpensive materials, and incorporates “live edge” curves, making each structure quite unique. By lending a hand, students will gain skills, work on a rewarding group project, and perhaps pique their interest in a grindbygg of their very own. Past North House timber framing students and other experienced woodworkers with timber framing aspirations are urged to participate, but beginners are welcome. Daily lunch included.
