Service Learning Project: Norwegian-Style Timber Framed Grindbygg “Tents” for Campus
Help North House move beyond the white plastic tent by building small grindbygg structures for campus! Campus is often graced by a variety of beautiful timbered structures, but we have a particular need for several smaller “tent-sized” frames that are easy to put up and take down and can be used for shelter for demonstrating artisans and and other outdoor projects. Learn the basics of grindbygg building, a very old style of Norwegian timber framing, which is highly adaptable, uses relatively inexpensive materials and incorporates “live edge” curves, making each structure quite unique. By lending a hand, students will gain skills, work on a fun group project and perhaps pique their interest in a grindbygg of their very own. Past North House timber framing students and other experienced woodworkers with timber framing aspirations are urged to participate, but beginners are welcome. Daily lunch included.
