Perching Stools

Course Overview

We all spend a lot of time sitting, so how can we do a better job of it? The key ergonomic feature of a perching stool is the forward sloping seat which rotates your pelvis, keeping your back aligned in its natural s-shape. It makes for a comfortable rest at your desk or workbench. Though not a traditional form itself, the project borrows from Windsor chair techniques. This is a great introductory project for those curious about making chairs or experimenting with other staked furniture. In this class, we will learn about material selection, layout, and design. This project will introduce students to shaping components with hand planes, draw knives, and sculpting a seat using gouges. We will also discuss details such as carved embellishments and painting. As you may have heard, sitting is the new smoking, so why not perch on a hand-carved piece of furniture instead?
