In celebration of the 100th anniversary of Säterglätan Handcraft Institute in Dalarna Sweden, North House is excited to welcome Susanna Ayton, the lead weaving instructor at the renowned school. Susanna will offer an intermediate weaving class focused on rosepath weaving, a deeply Scandinavian weave structure. In the deep Swedish forests, rosepath weaving was used to make warm blankets for cold winter nights. These textiles feature a riot of colors and patterns that were treasured ways of cheering up the tiny, dark homes. It is still a popular technique today, and often used for wall hangings, cushions, or rag rugs.

During this course we will try several different variants of rosepath weaving. We will learn how to create patterns, discuss traditional and modern ways of pattern drafting and we will talk about the history and rosepath technique. By the end of the course, students will have either woven several separate samples, approximately 14 x 14 inches, that can be used in a variety of ways (patches on a jacket or bag, small pillows, or tablemats) or may choose to weave a longer sampler with each variety of rosepath succeeding the last, to be used as a table runner or wall hanging. Students should be able to warp a floor loom with minimal assistance and have basic weaving experience.
