Forging Traditional Late Iron Age Blades
Course Overview
Small blades dating from the Late Iron Age are well represented in the archeological record across Scandinavia and Russia. Small blades were used extensively on a daily basis for all manner of tasks from agricultural endeavors to food preparation. This class will allow students to become familiar with the design elements of these blades and forge reproduction blades using traditional coal forges and hand forging techniques. Students will go on to heat treat their blades and finish by fitting a handle and leather sheath. The Late Iron Age/Viking Age was a dynamic period of Northern European history. Hopefully this class will give students greater insight into the everyday activities of people living during this interesting time. Materials fee includes the use of coal/gas for forgework and the cost of steel, etc. This course is open to students ages 14-17 if accompanied by an adult.
Required Tools
Students are required to wear eye and ear protection. The school provides these but you may wish to bring your own to ensure the best fit and comfort.
