Basketry
Willow Bark Trays
Course Overview
Two layers of thick willow bark woven together create the rich texture of this tray. The weave is simple, but students will gain experience in many aspects of weaving bark: cutting straight weavers from lumpy pieces of bark, using different weaver widths to create specific designs and looks, and coping with the shrinkage of willow bark as it dries. The tray will be finished with a folded willow bark rim and blanket stitch. During class we will discuss growing willow and harvesting bark from wild or cultivated willows, and some of the many ways to use this beautiful bark. Willow bark from Katherine’s farm in Northwest Washington will be used in class. The size of project baskets may vary, but they will be approximately 11”x11”x 2.5”.
