Twined Knitting: Online Course

Course Overview

Dive into the special Swedish knitting technique of tvåändstickning, also called twined knitting or two-ended knitting. With this technique, the knitter works with two strands of yarn at the same time, traditionally from both ends of the same ball of yarn, twisting them between every stitch. While this type of knitting takes longer, it results in a finished product that is warmer, more wind-resistant, and harder-wearing. Over two Wednesday afternoons, students will make a wrist warmer to focus on the technique of twining knit and purl stitches, as well as learning the crook stitch and how to add color work. The finished wrist warmers are approximately 8 1/2” in circumference and 3 1/4” tall.

This class is suitable for adventurous intermediate or advanced knitters who are ready to consider foundational knitting techniques in a new way. Be prepared to slow down and think! Knitters should be able to cast on, knit and purl, and work with two colors.

Required

You will need the following tools for this class:

Yarn: Recommended yarn is Hygge Tveband Sport* (100% two-ply wool 320 yards (293 m) / 3.53 oz (100 g) per skein); 25g of two colors, and 6 yards of a third color. The website theyarnguys.com can show you where this brand of yarn is available, but it can be quite tricky to track down. Feel free to use any fingering weight or sock yarn that you can more easily obtain.

Needles: Size 2.5 mm double point needles, magic loop equivalent, or whatever needle size is necessary to achieve gauge.

Finished size: 8 ½ in [21 cm] circumference and 3 ¼ in [8.25 cm] height

If you know you knit tight or loose, please bring have handy larger or smaller needles as you deem necessary. Our gauge is 8.75 st = 1 inch with the Hygge yarn, but the gauge for twined knitting is almost always tighter than stockinette st.

*Hygge yarn is from Norway, and is Z-spun. Z-spun yarn is very hard to find commercially made, and is far superior for twined knitting. If you spin, and are up to it, prepare fingering weight, z-spun yarn in two colors, with a very small amount in a third color.
