Course Overview

This class is for those who want to explore the ancient and mostly forgotten art of sprang, an ancient method of twisting threads where each row worked yields two rows of cloth. Sprang was used in many places around the world to create an elastic fabric before the age of machines.

Starting with a prewarped frame, students will learn to hold and manipulate the threads to create cloth. Through a series of small projects, students will have multiple opportunities to practice each step, from warping to finishing. With each project, students can learn a new design element or reinforce the techniques already learned. Each student is encouraged to move at their own pace, and intermediate techniques will be taught for those who already have familiarity with sprang.

Physical ability note: Finger and wrist dexterity. Ability to sit and work in the same position for several hours a day.

Students ages 16+ may register for this course independently. Students ages 14-15 may register with a full-paying adult. The youth student will receive a 25% intergenerational discount; call to register. Adult/child pairs will complete two projects and pay two materials fees.

Optional Tools

  • Scissors
  • Crochet hooks (sizes G, H, or I), knitting needles (short needles, sizes 6-9 work best), and large-eyed tapestry needles, if you have favorites of any of these. We will use them for finishing our projects.
