Spoon Carving for Wood Week

Course Overview

Carving wooden spoons is a wonderful gateway into the world of green woodworking. A deceptively simple object, the spoon is something that a beginning carver can approximate, but takes a lifetime to master. In this course, we will take a "deep dive" into this craft, learning from the past and bringing it forward into contemporary life in our own way. Spoon carving is an excellent vehicle for learning about wood, especially grain orientation; safe, controlled, and efficient carving techniques; ax work; and tool sharpening. We will cover everything from tool choices to selecting and preparing wood to finishing completed projects so they can be used and enjoyed for many years. Please note this course is open to all levels, but requires a basic amount of hand strength, stamina, and focus to be able to complete projects listed. Being able to open a sealed jar is an example of basic hand strength.

This course will be part of Wood Week. Plan to arrive a day early for the Carvers Conference on Friday, March 14, which features demonstrations, speakers, and community gatherings all day, offered as a benefit to students enrolled in Wood Week coursework.
