Sewing a Viking Age Woolen Hood
Course Overview
Warm, weather-hardy, comfortable hoods were commonplace in the Viking Age, the Medieval Period, and beyond. During this one-day class, students will sew their own woolen hood, lined with a soft fabric so it is both comfortable and fashionable. This hood pattern is based on an archeological find from Skjoldehamn, Norway, a well-studied bog body who was wearing many woolen garments at the time of their entombment in the marshes. We will practice basic sewing techniques, simple garment construction, some decorative hand-sewing, and we will be creating ropes and tassels using the ancient practice of jugglebraiding. This class will involve lots of hand-sewing.
