Course Overview

Learn to create stunning flat weave wool rugs in the Scandinavian rölakan style! This class teaches the fundamentals of rug weaving in a rölakan geometric tapestry style, learned from the revered Swedish rug weaver Ulla Parkdal. In 2023, weaver and instructor Christine Novotny studied with Ulla Parkdal to learn her specific style. Ulla is a spirited weaver with a tremendous 60-year career as both a textile designer and hand weaver. She prizes efficiency, good physical technique, and a "no fuss” approach to the craft.

In this four day intensive, students will weave a small sample carpet to practice the skills and techniques needed to scale up to a larger rug. We will graph out a design, practice blending colors in the weft to achieve dynamic hues, and learn to finish the edges of the rug in a classic fashion.

Students are required to know how to warp a floor loom for this intermediate level class.
