Plaited Ribbons and Woven Tapes
Course Overview
In this sampler workshop, we will make a variety of plaited and woven ribbons, tapes, and cords using brightly colored wool and linen from Estonia and Lithuania. The projects in this workshop will all be drawn from historical textiles, making them suitable both for folk dress and contemporary uses. Starting with simple fishtail braids, we will build up to unique Baltic plaits and finger weaving. Students will have the opportunity to try different band and cord-making tools, like weaving tablets, lucets, rigid heddles, and whipcord bobbins. We will also explore traditional and contemporary applications for these narrow wares, including their use in folk dress and finishing woven textiles.
No experience is necessary, and all materials will be provided. Participants will need basic hand skills (manipulating multiple threads, keeping tension), but the work is not strenuous and can be done while seated. Youth 14+ can register independently. Youth ages 8+ may register if accompanied by an adult. Adult/child pairs will complete separate projects and pay two materials fees. A 25% tuition discount applies to the youth registrant when registering with a full paying adult; call to register.
Optional Tools
- Students may bring their own threads, heddles, weaving tablets, etc. for supported instruction in their use, but no materials are required other than what will be provided by the instructor.
- Reading glasses if you need them.
