Playing with natural dyes is a cross between chemistry and magic. Unlike synthetic dyes, one natural dye can produce a variety of colors. In this class, we will explore how altering mordants, shifting pH, and afterbaths can produce a variety of colors all from a single pot. Students will go home with at least eight 25-yard skeins all from one pot.

This introductory level class’s discussions will include dye methods, a history of natural dyes, and the Scandinavian techniques of using lichens for dye baths.

Students ages 16+ may register for this course independently. Youth ages 13-15 may register if accompanied by an adult. Adult/child pairs will complete two projects and pay two materials fees. A 25% tuition discount applies to the youth registrant when registering with a full-paying adult; call to register.
