A simple hand-sewn repair can be the difference between tossing a beloved article of clothing and adding years to its life. In this class, we will focus on a few simple stitches that can be used in various ways to close seams, patch holes, or darn worn areas. In addition to practicing these techniques, we will also discuss the tools and materials needed to begin hand-sewing repairs.

Students are encouraged to bring items from their personal mending piles, and as time allows, we will discuss specific projects or repairs, using these items as case studies.

Skill/experience details: No sewing experience required to participate.

Physical ability notes: Threading the eye of a needle can be challenging to see. If you require glasses for reading, please bring them along.

• Sewing tools that students already have and are interested in learning about and practicing with (thimbles, seam rippers, hand sewing needles, small scissors/thread snips, various weights and colors of thread, fabric patches, pins, etc.)
