Make Your Own Sewing Kit: Introduction to Sewing Machines

Course Overview

Patchwork is an approach to sewing where fabric scraps of any size are transformed by coming together into a larger piece. This design and craft process is grounded in re-use and sustainability, with one-of-a-kind outcomes.

This introductory class begins with an overview of how to use a sewing machine, different cutting tools and fabrics, and basic seam construction. This gives students the skills needed to begin building their unique patchwork fabric. On Day 2, we will work together to make a small sewing kit to be stocked with sewing essentials, some of which will be made by students. This project offers hands-on experience with a variety of tools and materials to help students to build skills and confidence to launch into exploring other types of sewing, from quilting to mending to making garments.

Provided materials: Irons and ironing boards, thread, pins, and other miscellaneous materials. North House has sewing machines available to students who would like to use them, but students are allowed to bring their own machine if it is in working order. If you need to use a North House machine, please contact us at info@northhouse.org
