Kids Only - Slöjd in the Wood Shop

Course Overview

This is a course for kids only, and is meant as an introduction to the various hand tools and simple skills involved in working with wood in the shop. The course is co-taught by a father and son team, Paul Linden and Avery Carlson (age 16). Avery has been working with many of these tools and processes for over 8 years. We will start with an introduction to each of the tools that we will be using, stressing safety for both the child and the tool. Our project will involve making a small coat hook/peg board, students will design their own and be free to finish and paint them as they see fit. Following the Slöyd education model, the instructor will not touch the student’s work unless specifically requested, but allow them to complete the project wholly by themselves. The tools that we will learn about and use will be: drill and brace, block plane and larger bench plane, saw, drawknife, small carving knife. We hope that this course will serve as either an empowering start or an invigorating catalyst to a lifelong relationship with hand tools and craftwork.

This class is for kids only, ages 10+.
