Fiber Art
Handspinning for Beginners: From Spindle to Wheel
Course Overview
Before industrialization, spinning yarn was an essential part of everyday life. Today, machine-made yarn is abundant and good enough for some makers, but perhaps you’ve wondered what else exists beyond the mill. If so, this class is for you.
Explore the roots of handspinning as we transform wool into yarn. Students will get to know both processed and raw fiber while building skills on drop spindles and a variety of spinning wheels. Along the way, we’ll explore the nuts and bolts of how yarn works and how the ancient craft of spinning by hand continues to evolve. Students will have space to experiment with texture and technique while creating finished yarn ready to use in their next project.
No experience is required. Handspinning typically requires simultaneous use of both hands and feet. Please reach out to Riley (Riley[dot]kleve@gmail.com) with any questions about physical accessibility.
Students ages 16+ may register for this course independently. Youth ages 12+ may register if accompanied by an adult. Adult/child pairs will complete two projects and pay two materials fees. A 25% tuition discount applies to the youth registrant when registering with a full paying adult; call to register.
