Carve a wooden figure for the upcoming holiday season—either as a gift for someone special, or for yourself (since you are special, too, right?). Harley, who says, "If you can peel a potato, you can carve a figure," will lead new as well as experienced carvers through the process of carving a Swedish tomte, or a Sankta Lucia figure, primarily using one single fixed-blade whittling knife. Learning the folklore of these cultural characters will be part of the experience.

You will need the following tools for this class:

• A fixed blade carving/whittling/straight knife, such as a Pinewood Forge "Harley Knife" or OCCT Straight knife. Knives are available for purchase in the school store or from the instructor. (Due to the thickness of its blade, a standard Mora 122 knife is not ideal for this type of carving.)

Feel free to bring your favorite tools and whatever materials you might feel appropriate for this course.
