Course Overview

Julia Kalthoff has spent a lot of time thinking about axe handles, and even more time making them for her company Kalthoff Axes. The choice of material, the curve of the wood, and the finish for the hand are all details that matter. Julia has opinions and ideas she’s ready to discuss with fellow axe enthusiasts. She will go through her handling process step by step using green wood and share a small collection of old axe handles for inspiration. Students need to bring an axe head in need of a new handle; a choice of woods for handles will be available. Some previous experience with green woodworking is needed for this course. Ages 15+ welcome to attend. A materials fee of $50 and up will be payable at the beginning of class.
