Weaving With Wild Yarns

Course Overview

For too long, adventurous weavers reaching for expressive yarns have been met with a refrain: “you can’t weave with that!” But when you know how your yarn works, you can weave with just about anything. If you’re looking for a yarn-expansive deep-dive on weaving with a balance of exploration and structure, this class is for you! We’ll supply an assortment of oddball yarns to try out: chenilles, bouclés, and metallics; yarns that stretch and yarns that shrink; wools, cottons, synthetics, and, yes, even mohair. Learn how to wind a mixed warp, get tips for easy sampling, and discover better ways to warp your loom from front to back (strictly optional). Explore weave structures well-suited for mixed warps, including honeycomb and waffle weave.

Students can choose from a selection of projects to weave during class, including a scarf, a piece of art for the wall, or a collection of samples. A range of projects and structures will be available for students at different experience levels. Some experience weaving on a floor loom is helpful but not required. Bring yarn that you’re curious about weaving with, and get ready for an adventure on the loom! Cost for materials will vary depending on student project; expect to pay between $30-$50 to the instructor during class.

Physical ability note: Setting up a loom requires good close-up vision. If you use glasses to read, make sure to bring them with you to class.

This course is open to students ages 14+. Youth ages 12+ are welcome to register with an adult. Adult/child pairs will complete two projects and pay two materials fees. A 25% tuition discount applies to the youth registrant when registering with a full-paying adult; call to register.
