Spinning for Knitting: North House Cap and Crescent Shawl

Course Overview

From plump singles, to plied yarns, to the thinnest of worsted lace weight, spinners and knitters with some experience will explore prepping and spinning yarns for your own knitted items!  Revisit skills for creating yarn and for knitting design. Delve into color inspirations, spinning methods, wheel mechanics and use, plying ideas, and lessons in consistency.  Explore facets of two garment designs to start, a North House Cap and The Crescent Shawl.  Learn what to do with your spinning wheel and the yarn you have made. Martha will provide appropriate wools, dyed and undyed for student use, but this is also a time to bring unused items from your stash and make a plan!

Required Tools

  • Apron
  • IF you can bring it, Spinning wheel in good working order.  ( please let North House know if you need to borrow a school spinning wheel.
  • Knitting needles; multiple sizes and lengths.  Circular and Double Pointed…..Martha will also be bringing a handful and there is a local yarn store. 
  • Notebook and pencil
  • Inspiring postcard or color combination photo

Optional Tools

  • Spinning wheel in good working order
  • Pair of hand cards
  • Oil bottle
