Course
Rag Weaving on a Harness Loom
Course Overview
Rag weaving or "fabric strip weaving" has been a staple of weavers for many years. When the Scandinavian settlers came to northern Minnesota, they brought this tradition with them. People would save worn out clothing and textiles, cut them into strips and weave them into colorful rag rugs. In this course students will weave on full-sized floor and table looms at the Sugar Bush weaving studio near Grand Marais. Loom design, loom threading, harness set up (harnesses lift the warps and thus define the weaving pattern), and strip cutting will all be part of the course. The final creation is a beautiful 18" wide table runner. Students may bring their own old sheets, shirts or fabric yardage or use provided materials. A detailed list of supplies and types of fabric to bring is provided for registered students. People who own portable looms may bring them to use in class. No weaving experience is necessary - maximum course size 6 students. Tuition includes a homemade lunch each day.
