Course Overview

In the days before seed catalogs, collecting and saving seeds for the next year’s garden was essential for survival. Thanks to these early seed saving pioneers and their centuries of careful observation and work we now have a plethora of garden crops that thrive in northern climes, allowing for a rich, varied and local diet. Join Grant Olson of Seed Savers’ Exchange to learn how you and your garden can become part of this living legacy. If you’re interested in seed saving, understanding some basic concepts before you get started will make the process easier. Learn the difference between open-pollinated and hybrid seed and gain understanding of plant taxonomy, reproductive structures and pollination methods. We’ll also touch on the isolation techniques used at Heritage Farm, the 890-acre home of SSE. Leave inspired to think about gardening in a whole new way.
