Course
Old-World Spoon Carving
Course Overview
Spoon making is an integral element in Scandinavian woodcarving. Each spoon literally emerges from a naturally crocked bend from green birch or other deciduous wood, with the elemental beauty and strength of the wood’s grain revealed during the carving process. During this course students will use traditional hand tools: splitting with a mallet, hewing with an axe, shaving with a drawknife and shaping with a knife. Discussions regarding traditional design, material selection, tool sharpening, and knife grasps are included. Scandinavian history will also be explored. Materials fee covers resources for two spoons – extra stock will also be available. Some prior woodcarving experienced is strongly encouraged but not required.
