Course
Messing About WITH Boats: Boat Friends Service Day
Course Overview
A number of traditional boats grace the North House Folk School waterfront and finding time for a little TLC is a priority each spring. Interested in boats, their construction and their care? Spend quality time in North House's workshops learning to maintain and work with a variety of traditional boats and the sailing fleet. Your 'service'? You'll work with North House's fleet of small wooden boats - ranging from the Susan skiff, a small fleet of nutshell sailing prams, a logging batteau reproduction and a number of traditionally plank-built Norse prams. A great opportunity to get your head and hands on the waterfront at the North House Folk School. Your participation fees for this service learning project may include:
* basic sail rigging skills for small wooden boats
* preserving hulls and proper maintenance measures for wooden boats
* finishing of oars and spars and marine painting techniques, including traditional wooden boat preservatives
* lunch served daily on the North House campus for all service learning participants
* Saturday night pizza potluck in North House's wood-fired pizza oven
