Knitting Skolt Sami Socks: Online Course

Course Overview

The Sámi are Scandinavia’s only UN-recognized indigenous people. This class will focus on the Skolt Sami, whose traditional homeland lies at the junction of Norway, Finland and Russia. Instructor Laura Ricketts wrote the pattern for these historical socks and they were featured in the Jan/Feb 2018 historical knitting edition of PieceWork magazine. Join us in beginning the sock cuffs with symbolic, Skolt patterns as we examine their rich tradition in wool. $9.00 covers pattern.

Skill Level: Adventurous Beginner-Intermediate. Basic knitting skills (knit, purl) knitting in the round and stranding experience

Finished Size 9 1/4" foot circumference and 9 1/2" long from back of heel to tip of toe.

Homework to do before class- After swatching to get gauge, using main color, cast on 48 sts in the round and knit 2/purl 2 for a round. Repeat round for 2 in / 5 cm. Leave on the needles and have ready for class.

Required Tools

  • Yarn: Cascade 220 (100% Peruvian highland wool; 220 yd [200 m]/31/2 oz [100 g]) in the following colors: #7822 Van Dyke brown (MC), #7827 goldenrod (A), #4147 lemon yellow (B), and #7804 shrimp (C), you will need 1 skein of each color.
  • Needles Size 6 (4 mm). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.
  • Notions Markers (m); stitch holder; tapestry needle.
  • Gauge 21 sts and 28 rnds = 4" in St st.
